Life is a journey and from my experience most people don't take the time to focus that journey on improving themselves. You'd be amazed at how much easier and less stressful life can be if you stopped focusing on other people's issues but start focusing on your own. These 6 P's have been the key to my happiness. I've had a few of these P's in my life throughout my life, but it wasn't until the past few years I've had most of them come together at once. Here they are:
Passion- I put this at #1. Having a passion in my life is my personal key to happiness. About 9 1/2 years ago I started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I immediately fell in love with the art. Excluding vacations I have trained about 6-10 times per week since I started. Every morning when I wake up I look forward to training and getting better. Chances are if you are unhappy in life you are lacking a passion. This could be anything for you, and only you. Find a passion for yourself, that doesn't rely on someone else to make you happy. Set goals, milestones, etc with your passion. If you have a reason to get out of bed everyday, you'll find life can be pretty amazing.
People- You are who you hang around. If you are surrounded by negative people, get away, you'll find you just end up negative and unhappy if you surround yourself with these people. True friends want you to be happy, even if that means it takes time away from them. This goes especially for a significant others in your life. Do they build you up or put you down? I am also fortunate enough to have a mom and a brother who love me unconditionally and always encourage me to pursue my dreams. Find unconditional love in your life, they will inspire you to be a better person.
Place- Do you like where you wake up everyday? Part of the reason I was so unhappy everyday when I was a stock broker was my environment. I didn't like living in New York City and didn't like the environment I was surrounded by. In the summer of 2003 I quit and moved to Hawaii 6 months later. Waking up in Hawaii in my little beach town of Kailua every morning never got old. I’ve since moved but even today I enjoy traveling to amazing places and spending my winters in the warm Miami sun.
Purpose- Almost all of us have a job, but that job doesn't have to be your purpose in life. My purpose . . . to spread the plant-based lifestyle message through education, inspiration and motivation, helping people live a disease-free, healthy and happy life, achieving optimal weight and fitness, while positively impacting the planet and all its inhabitants. I wrote that out like 5 years ago and it still holds true today and is now my business. I now make an income living my purpose and helping people get healthy while positively helping the animals and the planet. I believe everyone has a purpose in life and it’s your job to figure out what that is. It doesn’t have to be a career, it could be anything.
Pets- I know it isn't feasible for everyone to have a pet, but what joy they can bring to your life. Pets are the best example of unconditional love I know. When I had my Boston Terrier Elli she put a smile on my face everyday, and she was a key part to my happiness. Now I live in a place with 2 dogs who I love coming home to see.
Plate- What is on your dietary plate has a tremendous affect on your overall health and happiness. Nourishing your body with unprocessed whole plant foods has an incredible result on your mind and body. You’ll also have the comfort knowing the chances of dying from the #1 and #2 killers heart disease and cancer will be very slim. Your overall diet plays the biggest role in your mood, health, mind, and body. Do not neglect your health. You only have a few meals a day so nourish your body with the healthiest foods possible- fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, & nuts/seeds.
All these P's don't involve substantial money or vacations. Life is happiest in the simplest form, day to day. Find a passion for you that you can enjoy numerous times per week, surround yourself with positive people, find a purpose, wake up in a place you love, get a pet if you have the proper time to care for them, and nourish your body with whole plant foods.
Remember, it's your life, nobody else's, you have a right to be happy. I think these 6 P's can help you on the path to do that. Remember, for things to change you have to change. For things to get better you have to get better.
